Off during May
April was a flat month for us. I attribute this to the odd weather that occurred during the month and the evil state and federal taxes were upon all of us. As a result we only drew one ticket for April and the winner is Tony Birge.
We will be receiving a large restock of Ravensberger puzzles and games within the next week so if you are looking for puzzles we will have an excellent stock. We have also opened with a distributor who sells Cribbage, Dominoes, Mahjongg and other games.
We have brought in different miniatures games for folks to play. In addition to Warhammer and Warmachine, we will now be carrying Dystopian Wars, Flames of War, Dust Tactics as well as the Hail Caesar and Black Powder rule sets.
We will be receiving a large (slight understatement) of Ravensberger Puzzles probably late next week. If you are a puzzle person you should come check it out.
WE WILL BE CLOSED EASTER SUNDAY APRIL 8TH
Again, we here at HoG (House of Games) would like to thank you, our customer for another month of fantastic growth. We ended up the month again by 27%. So it means that three lucky customers were picked from the tickets. These winners were Dylan Shelton, John Healy and Arjay. The remaining tickets were put into storage for a future drawing for our one year anniversary.
We finished our second month of the 40k challenge league with Craig and his fierce some Tyrannids. A $10 gift certificate goes to him.
We have added or are adding the following weekly events. Sunday Angels 20 airplane miniatures game to the calendar noon to whenever, Wednesday Flames of War 4-close, Thursdays Warmachine/horde 5:30 to close
We at House of Games wish to congratulate our winners of the Settlers of Catan Tournament. These two out traded and out clevered the other players. The winner was Dan and the 2nd place prize went to Chris. Congrats to both. Our next tournament will be CARCASSONNE and it will be held on April 28th. We are taking pre-signups now for it.
We are expecting in many new things in the next couple of weeks as the GAMA trade show has just passed. Lords of Waterdeep, Flames of War 3rd edition and Oz fluxx are just the beginning of the new products that are due in this week.
Lords of Waterdeep has been called Settlers of Catan meets Monopoly. It is a somewhat apt description but the game plays well and plays fast even with five players. We have a preview copy of the game for you take a look at. We have played it several times and all are agreed that it is a fun game.
You play a faction in Waterdeep under the control of one of the Lords of Waterdeep. The Lords are drawn randomly for each player and each of the lords can give you a bonus to specific quests you need to complete to win the game. The game is a victory point game.
Each player starts with a variable number of agents, usually two depending on the amount of players in the game. You get money to start with and two quest cards and two intrigue cards. You decide to put your agent in a spot in the city to gather something, be it buying a building or hiring adventurers to help complete quests, gathering intrigue cards or something else. Generally you will have to decide on what priorities that you will need to do. Next if you can complete a quest you can do so and gain the rewards from it, usually victory points. Play then moves to the next player and around back to you to allow you to place your second agent. Once all the agents are played the turn ends, there is an exception if you have agents in Waterdeep harbor. These agents may be moved again and then the turn ends. You remove the agents and place them back into your tavern.
Quests-Quests are what earn you victory points. There are five types of quests in the game as well as a couple named plotline quests. You complete these quests by gathering the adventurers (a series of colored blocks) whom represent fighter, wizards, rogues and clerics. You gather them by going to places where you can get them. There are various buildings in Waterdeep that give you access to these resources and you have the ability to buy a building at a specific site which also adds to the resource base.
When you complete the quest, you turn in what was necessary to complete the quest and you earn the rewards. For example the Piety quest heal fallen gray hand warriors requires 2 cleric and 1 wizard token and 4 gold. As the reward you get 6 victory points and six warriors for future use. Once the quest is finished it is turned upside down at your tavern. The only way to get more quests is to stop at the Cliffwatch inn and pick up another one.
Intrigue cards-these are generally a form of wild card and most can only be played at Waterdeep Harbor. Example the card Graduation Day, a player gains 2 wizards and chooses one of his opponents to also gain a wizard. Not all of the cards are beneficial to everybody.
Lastly there are buildings that you can purchase; each building has a cost and a benefit. Fetlock Court for instance gives who lands there 2 warrior and 1 wizard token. In addition, the owner of the building also gains a fighter or a wizard also. So if you owned the building you could get the 2 warrior and 1 wizard plus either another wizard or a fighter.
As I mentioned before it is a victory point game and points can accumulate fairly rapidly. All in all it is an easy and enjoyable game to be played. The game can essentially be referenced from the last page of the rule book and the component tray is set up to handle all the parts of the game.
We at House of Games would like to thank you the customer for enabling us to grow rapidly this last month. As a result we achieved a 28% growth rate from January to February. This meant that we would give out three $100 gift certificates to three lucky customers.
We are continuing the drawing into March and all the non winning tickets are being kept for a drawing in the future. The same rules apply, for each $40 before taxes that you purchase you will receive a ticket to be put into a drawing at the end of the month. The winner gets a $100 gift certificate.
This months winners Daniel Wong, Peter Ifurung and Matt Espinoza
DOMINION TOURNAMENT FEB 25
On Saturday February 25th we held our second board game tournament. The game was Dominion and there were fifteen eager contestants playing. The tournament went three rounds and after the dust settled, the winner was a young lady named Megan who won a $30 gift certificate from the store. Her sister finished in third and mom and Dad also finished in the top ten.
By all accounts it was fun, which was the most important feature that we were looking for.
Next months Tournament will be Settlers of Catan. As before, if you have a copy of the 4 player game bring it and if you have the 5-6 player expansion, bring it as well. We are looking for 16 players. Due to the game length of Settlers, the tournament will be two rounds, with the winners of each table going to a final table, 2nd place finishers to a second table etc.
LATE FEBRUARY AND EARLY MARCH REMINDERS
A reminder of our Dominion Tournament February 25th, we currently have nine signups for the tournament. Space is limited. Cost is $5 and we will ask that you bring your copy of the core game. If we need to use your copy, you will get a $2 discount on the entry. Please be at the store at 11am to start sign ups.
We have also decided that the Last Saturday Tournament for March will be SETTLERS OF CATAN. That tournament will occur on March 24th.
BATTLETECH SATURDAY MARCH 3
If you have wanted to give BATTLETECH a try now is a good time. All figures will be supplied for this game scheduled to start at 11:30am. No experience is necessary
WEEKLY EVENTS UPDATE
Thursday nights a new Pathfinder game will be starting and we are also trying to add a 2nd 4th edition game of Dungeons and Dragons on Sundays.
FEBRUARY AT HOUSE OF GAMES
It’s February, with a special extra day this year, so we will have a little contest for the extra day. The winner will receive a $100 gift certificate. How do you sign up for this? Simple, any purchase from February 1-29th of $40 or greater before taxes will receive a ticket for the drawing. You will receive additional tickets for each multiple of $40, for example a $120 purchase will get three tickets.
In addition, if we make our estimated sales increase of 20% from January, we will add another $100 gift certificate to the prize. If we make 25% we will add a third gift certificate with the caveat that you may not win more than one gift certificate.
We also will have this month our Final Saturday of the Month event, a Dominion Tournament using the base game. We are expecting a good turn out and space will be limited.
We will be starting our challenge ladder for Warhammer 40k beginning today. Those who have signed up can stop by and pick up the list of players to challenge. A $10 gift certificate for the person at the top of the list at the end of the month.
Also there will be the SECRET WORD SALE occurring sometime this month. Keep checkin the Facebook page for this.

Entertainment value of games
One comment I hear quite a bit about games is they are expensive. I consider games as entertainment equivalent to going to a movie or a concert or sporting event with the additional benefit that you still have something in your hand vs. just memories of the other events. For example a family of four goes to the movies, even at bargain matinees, that’s about $26 before popcorn and other goodies, and if it’s a 3d movie, it’s now nearly $40 before any goodies. All you have afterward is memories.
Now consider a game like Ticket to Ride. It’s $50. If you only play it once, the cost is comparable to going to the movies but you have the ability to play the game again and again. The actual cost of the entertainment drops the more times you play it. In our movie comparison, assuming no goodies and a 3d movie is $10 per person with no replay value. If you play Ticket to ride even three times with the family, the cost per person is $50/4 and then divided by three for a total of $4+ dollar per person. Which is the better deal?
In addition, you’ll be participating in a family activity, which in my belief helps to bolster better communications among the family.
Remember to consider games as entertainment value.
RISK TOURNAMENT

The components consist of plastic space ships and wooden counters, both styles are similar to the pieces in the following games: Alien Frontiers and Eminent Domain. One Month In
Now that the start-up nightmares are receding into the past, it’s time to reflect on things that have happened in the first month. We have met lots of nice folk, who are gamers and will hopefully become friends of the store. We are now listed on the WOC, GW, Rio Grande games, Days of Wonder, Zman games, Mayfair, Fantasy Flight store locator and Yelp as well has having our own website and am continuing to use Facebook as a common method of communicating with each other.
Tuesday nights are beginning to come together. We are getting folks in to play board games and 40k. The Wednesday Pathfinder and Saturday 4th ed. Game are moving along. We are still working on the other days to get things off the ground.
To the bad, I found out that that one of the reasons that we are difficult to find on the web is that there is a step which I missed with Google when starting the store information. This problem will be fixed soon so we should be easier to find. Google will mail a confirmation of my existence in the next couple of weeks about verifying the location so it will show on the searches.
The other bad was missing the projection of initial sales by a large amount to the bad side. This has caused some tightness of money beyond what was expected. I suspect it was a combination of not doing the Google stuff correctly, the economy as a whole and probably an over expectation of how much folks would be buying during that first month.
That being said we are confident that Christmas will be good and will bring us more new folk whom will discover and enjoy the store.
HOUSE CARDS
Allow me to introduce the “House card” from the House of Games. These cards in denominations of $5, $10, and $20 act as cash within the store with the some restrictions. They need to be used in their entirety in a purchase. For example you buy a $20 item and with tax it comes to $21.75. You may use any combination of your cards to make it to $20 and you pay the taxes, but you cannot use a $20 and $5 house card and expect to get money back.
How do you get one of these or multiple cards you may ask? By preordering product before it becomes available will be the primary way to get one or more. How much you get is determined by the SRP price of the products.
$25-50 is a $5 house card
$51-80 is a $10 house card
$81-100 is a $20 house card
Over $125 is a second $20 house card
You may stack a preorder purchase to get a card. For example, there is are 2 $15 items that you wish to preorder, individually you would not get a card for either one but if you purchased the two together you would be given a $5 card to use in the future.
To get the cards, the preorders must come in the month or two before the items are actually due. The deadline is the first day of the month that the product will come in. So during December you can actually preorder anything in January or February. On January first those items listed as coming in January will no longer be eligible for the cards.
We are doing this to help us be more efficient with our ordering and to give you folks something for making a commitment before the product is out.
This list below is not complete; it is more of a sampling of what is coming out in the next couple of months.

OTHER THINGS GOING ON
My partner (Jim) and I have known each other about 30 years and both of us enjoy games. We met during a Dungeons and Dragons session after Jim finished his time in the service. The other players were friends of his and they brought him in to play in the game. He has been one of the fixtures in the game for nearly thirty years.
We both enjoy the social interaction between the players in all games. We are both loud and always try to have a good time even if we are getting trounced, something that happens to me quite regularly as a matter of fact. We are both trash talkers (never maliciously though). Jim however is a very sharp player and you will generally have your hands full in any game that you might play with him.
We both believe that you will have better experiences in face to face games vs. playing a computer or video or even other opponents online with Ventrilo or Skype. We believe that face to face will help create friends or even casual acquaintances which will give you more opportunities to be able to play games.
